Reading this:

So after 20+ years Gosling realizes that Emacs was not the way to go?

I figure eventually that everyone realizes that the evolution path for editors just leads back to vi!

The reason why many people are using vi (including) is that we like quirky vi shortcuts and editmode. Despite it was primarily originated because of the stupidity of ancient terminals it surprisingly fits for touchtypers.
With Emacs it is different, so, yes, may be it make sense for switching from Emacs to Netbeans.
