The hotel should know that I am "Brian Aker"

It should be able to tell me if other friends are booked here, and that I am happy for them to know about me being here.

It should know that I want a non-smoking room.

It should know that I do not want the newspaper.

Most importantly?

It should know that I do not want starch put in my laundry.

Grrrrr.....

Hey, at least if you get hungry you can suck on your shirts for nourishment.

Mmm, starch.

This last may be a computationally hard problem. Or at least computationally stiff.

We are not too far off from a world where our social network is known.

The hotel here has me as a member... they could collect each time I say "no starch" and make the connection.

So I think it is doable :)

Privacy be damned!

maybe when you say "no starch, press" they think you're trying to say you're *from* No Starch Press, and then do whatever the heck they want with your clothes?

Very high end hotels do this sort of thing already.

My friend zzbottom used to be the after-hours manager of a very high end hotel in Boston, and his description of the lengths they to to customize their customers experience was mind blowing.

And most of there very well-heeled guests probably never realized how much work the rest of the world goes to to make their own lives feel so effortless.
