I thought about getting one of those... but I just bought a $15 used vacuum cleaner from a thrift/recycle store, and that is a lot closer to my current budget so I guess I'll just have to add that to my wishlist :)
And I have to admit that the name iRobot makes me think they are all going to join together and try to kill us all someday :P

They do! In an office full of people wearing headphones, many a time has our iRobot, Url (pronounced Earl) attempted to pull my head to the floor. It's rather disconcerting when your volume is up high enough that you don't hear him coming.

I've had one for a few months now, I love it. It doesn't do a 100% complete job, but each time it runs it picks up a lot of stuff from the floor. Well worth the money, and I suspect you will see one crawling around the floor the next time you are visiting.

To what extent does it get tangled up in wires, or get its innards stuffed with long hairs? How much attention does it need, e.g., to empty its dust box?

For wires, it is best to keep them off the floor. It misses a lot of them... but it has on a couple occasions nailed a few things in the house.
You need to empty it every three or so runs, and it does awesome with hair (think about it... how long with this last having Rosalynd around?). Hair is what I am most impressed with its ability to pick up.

There's hair, and then there's hair. Back when I had carpeting, the brushes on my vacuum cleaner often got tangled up with long hair, to the point that they didn't work properly. With hardwood floors, I don't use the brushes, so it's not an issue. I haven't seen the guts of a Roomba yet; I take it that this has not been an issue with yours?

More likely, they will eat all of our loose change and eat the cords to our stereo equipment.
