Hey all

I have been vegetarian for coming up to 11 years now. I have tried to make the transition to a veganism about 4 times in the last couple of years and always end up giving in. I am quite happy with alternatives to dairy products and I don't eat eggs or drink milk anyway. Basically, my downfall is cheese! I have recently stopped buying it all so that I can avoid temptation, and have bought some vegan cheese (that I can actually stomach) instead. But my boyfriend LOVES cheese and always has it around so it's impossible to avoid it entirely. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on making the transition easier for myself?
Thanks in advance :)

Vegan + drinking?

Hey all!

I've been properly vegan for 4 months now, and have been on-and-off vegetarian for the past year prior to becoming vegan. Eventually decided to just go for it, & I'm feeling great! I also have IBS and going vegan has helped my digestion oodles. I've also started doing yoga. So, overall, I feel way better than I used to!

Only one problem which has sprung up around the same time I started eating a healthy vegan diet (not a pizza & french fries vegan diet) - I've started to be unable to tolerate alcohol. Before I became vegan I was a pretty regular drinker with a very high tolerance, and without any adverse effects when drinking (as long as I drank a bit of water before bed I almost always avoided a hangover, no matter how much I drank). Now, all I have to do is have 2 drinks & I'm in the bathroom the entire night, even if I don't feel slightly drunk from those drinks (that's what I'm doing right now basically, just taking a brief interlude to post on here - it's 7am where I am, nope haven't slept, been too sick)!

I'm not too sure if anyone else has experienced this, or if this sort of reaction from my body has something to do with me generally being healthier and my body is rejecting what is effectively a poison (alcohol). I had made a conscious decision not to drink anymore, but last night I decided to see what effect minimal drinking would have (2 drinks over a 5 hour period). BAD IDEA!

This has never, ever been how my body has reacted, ever, not until I began eating a vegan diet.

Not sure if the two are connected. Thoughts?

this weekend's projects -

1 ghz oscilloscope preamp board. ~1 meg || 20 pf input impedance, switchable ac/dc, /1:/10 attenuation, x1:x10 gain. mechanical switches on this part for safety and noise isolation, main gain stage will go on a separate board and have all digital controls.

Oscilloscope preamp board

multifunction power management / io board. chip has three general purpose IO channels, two PWM channels, two analog inputs, nine voltage regulators (three fixed, three coarse adjustable, three fine adjustable), two switch-mode power supplies, a RGB LED driver, a white backlight LED driver, li-poly / li-ion charger, and automatic switching between battery / USB / wall wart power. they're intended for driving smartphones and / or GPS units - ten bucks a piece, but you certainly get your money's worth if you can utilize it all.

the chip package is evil though, the pins on it are only 0.2 millimeters wide. i may or may not actually be able to build it myself.

PMIC board

trying to get that thing routed on a breadboardable-ish single-sided pcb was a nightmare and a half, and i only half succeeded (the green ovals are jumper wire points). probably a waste of my time, really - i'd be better off making simpler, less densely packed boards and having someone else manufacture them (though they'd be $50-$100 a pop for a handful of prototypes).

i am OCD like whoah about these damn things. totally destroys my free time.

gah.

beer now plz.

How to veganize...?

Nov. 15th, 2009 | 05:01 am
posted by: [info]hobochan in [info]vegancooking

Thanksgiving is being held at my aunt's this year, and when my dad mistaken told her I was just a vegetarian, she cocked her head and said "That's okay - vegetarians can eat turkey! Otherwise, where would they get their protein!" Sigh. She evidently doesn't even know what a vegetarian is, let alone a vegan.

I would like to bring something where the look of the dish doesn't seem off-putting. When I think Thansgiving, I also think of a cheesy-type casserole. So here's my query. I found this dish, but is it able to be decently veganized? It seems pretty reliant on eggs, dairy and I'm not good with major substitutions... I prefer something with little soy (my body revolts), but I'm willing to try anything. For those who have made their own cheezes (I remember an almond feta that looked as if it might work in this) are there any you think would work best? Thank you everyone!

Butternut Squash and Cheddar Bread Pudding
2 lb's peeled, seeded butternut squash, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 6 c)
3 Tbsp olive oil, divided
1.5 tsp coarse kosher salt plus additional for sprinkling
7 lg eggs
2.25 c half-and-half
6 Tbsp dry white wine
1.5 tsp Dijon mustard
1 day-old baguette, torn into 1-inch pieces (about 10 c)
1 c chopped shallots (about 4 lg)
2 bunches Tuscan kale, ribs removed, coarsely chopped (about 1 lb)
8 oz extra-sharp cheddar cheese, coarsely grated

1. Preheat oven to 400 deg F. Toss squash with 1 Tbsp oil on rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle with coarse salt; bake until tender, turning occasionally, 20-25 min.
2. Whisk eggs in lg bowl. Add half-and-half, wine, mustard and 1.5 tsp coarse salt; whisk to blend. Add baguette pieces; fold gently into egg mixture. Let soak 30 min, stirring occasionally.
3. Meanwhile, heat 2 Tbsp oil in lg pot over med-high heat. Add shallots and saute until soft, stirring frequently, about 5 min. Ad kale; cover and cook 2 min. Uncover and stir until kale is wilted, but still bright green, about 5 min.
4. Reduce oven temp to 350 deg F. Generouly butter 9x13-inch baking dish. Using slotted spoon, transfer half of bread from egg mixture to prepared baking dish, arranging to cover most of dish. Spoon half of kale over bread. Spoon half of squash over bread and kale; sprinkle with half of cheese. Repeat with remaining bread, kale, squash and cheese. Pour remaining egg mixture over bread pudding.
5. Cover bread pudding with foil. Bake 20 min. Remove foil; bake uncovered until custard is set and bread feels springy to touch, about 20 min longer.
6. Preheat broiler; broil pudding until cheese browns slightly, about 2 min. Cool 5 min and serve.

Fature - Syncopated Computer Addiction EP

Nov. 15th, 2009 | 09:37 am
music: avant-garde, electronic, breakbeat, downtempo, nu-jazz
posted by: [info]fature_net in [info]electronicmusic

Inspired by machines, technology and the future. This short but sweet EP starts out with a back to back interpretation of Philip K. Dick classic theory, with some psychedelic avant-garde compositions. It then takes you into a new world, one that was inspired by the Amiga, with crisp hard hitting beats and a chip inspired bassline.
To finish off, the direction changes again into jazz influenced downtempo and nu-jazz, something not logical.
A lot of thought has gone into all these pieces, and hopefully you will enjoy them.

Looking for a bar/restaurant specializing in coffee drinks

I'm not too into beer or wine but I really love coffee drinks (e.g. Bailey's, Kahlua, White Russians - haven't tried what else is out there though). Is there a place in Seattle that specializes in mixed drinks/cocktails with coffee (if such a place exists)?

From what I can tell, coffee drinks are generally on the menu of most places but I wonder if there is a place that specializes in them.

I live in Fremont but don't mind going to Capitol Hill or similar. It doesn't have to be a bar, for example a karaoke place or a restaurant is fine. Thanks for any feedback!

30% off coupon at Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic

posted by: [info]geekchick

Anyone want a 30% off coupon good today (Nov. 15) in store at Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic? If so, leave me an email address to send it to in comments (screened); I can send up to 24 more. I tried it out today and it is good on sale and clearance items (so all told we ended up with a total 50% discount what with sale items, woohoo!), you just can't combine it with other coupons. Also, when you get the coupon you can choose one of several charities and 5% of your total will be donated to them. Donorschoose.org and Feeding America are two of the options, don't remember who the others were offhand. [Edit: It looks like the charity I picked, Feeding America, is what's assigned to you as well when I send the coupon.]

Daiya cheese

posted by: [info]catnip13 in [info]vegancooking

Ok, I was not really believing the hype about this Daiya cheese stuff, but I recently got my hands on some, and I had a quesadilla today. A real, melty, stretchy, delicious quesadilla. It still has that vaugely processed-chemically flavor, kind of like a Kraft single, but it NAILS the texture and mouthfeel. Daiya's about as nutritious as Vegenaise, mind you - no protein to speak of, no vitamins or minerals, but it is really, really, really tasty.

This Is Where It Happens

posted by: [info]art_lurker in [info]saucydwellings

Alright ladies and gentleman. I'm not sure if this is saucy, but this room is just not going to ever get any better than this. And, this is the last chance to document this space, because after seven years it's finally time to move on. I start packing next week, we're moving.
This has been the space and place where I have been figuring it out, making it work, developing a style, and finally, creating a successful art business and supporting myself. The room and I have grown around and into each other over the past 7 years, everything is in constant motion. The walls are perforated with a thousand push-pins. I never replaced that horrid pink carpeting, I never took down the wallpaper border that I hate more than anything - of course now that we have tenants moving in soon, we're replacing everything. Go fig. But for today, it's still my room and I'd like to invite you in for a beer.

Brunch?

Nov. 14th, 2009 | 06:09 pm
posted by: [info]starstealingirl in [info]vegrecipes

Hey vegetarians,

I've been invited to do a brunch-potluck-type-thing with some friends tomorrow, but I'm seriously lacking in cooking inspiration. This may reveal the utter limits of my brunch imagination, but one friend has already offered to cook an egg dish, and another is cooking a potato dish, and I have no clue whatsoever what I can make that will contribute to the brunch mix that is neither an egg nor a potato dish. Ideas? What are your favorite brunch dishes?

My friends are mostly of the meat-eating variety, so I want to make something that will appeal to them as well as to me.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Art studio progress. Our current WWOOFer has done an amazing amount of work out in the garage with cleaning up; rearranging and reorganizing; and getting the walls patched to be ready to paint. Next up is getting the kiln moved down here from Sue's studio in Snohomish and then getting the electricity run for the kiln. After that we'll sort of need to wait until I get a job so we can afford to finish insulating the space and do some of the other work we'll need to get done to make it really usable year round. I'm pretty happy so far though!...

Google Book Search Settlement Revised: No Reader Privacy Added

Nov. 14th, 2009 | 12:39 pm
posted by: [info]eff_news

Late Friday night the parties to the Google Book Search class action submitted a revised settlement agreement to the federal court in New York that is hearing the case.

Unfortunately, the parties did not add any reader privacy protections. The only nominal change was that they formally confirmed a position they had long taken privately that information will not be freely shared between Google and the Registry. Our partners at the ACLU of Northern California have a blog post describing the changes we, and the authors we represent, have demanded and continuing the call for readers everywhere to let Google CEO Eric Schmidt know that reader privacy should not be left behind as books move into the digital age.

The parties also asked for truncated notice and a rushed schedule with objections and opt-outs due on January 28, 2010 and a final fairness hearing on February 18, 2010. We'll be posting more about the revised settlement and the procedures going forward.

Dog surgeon recs needed

Nov. 14th, 2009 | 11:57 am
mood: thoughtful
posted by: [info]badoodie in [info]seattle

My St. Bernard has been recently diagnosed with bilateral elbow dysplasia. Currently she is being managed with Rimadyl, weight control, and optimizing her glucosamine, chondroitin, and fish oil supplements. Given that she's not quite 3 years old I'm giving serious consideration to arthroscopic surgery on her legs. Since this will not be cheap I want someone with great ortho experience.

Anyone with experiences/recommendations of local dog surgeons. Serveral people I work with have dogs with a variety of dog joint issues and had their surgeries performed by Dr. Engen at Puget Sound Animal Hospital for Surgery. All have positive reviews of him. The general concensus seemed to be that he's pretty conservative in his decisions to perform surgery. My own vet refers his patients to Animal Surgery Clinic in Shoreline. I know of one person who has used their services and he came away with the feeling that they pushed surgeries irrespective of quality of life.

The costs I know are insane. It looks like my plans to look for a place to buy next year will be put on hold but I'm okay with that.
