Have you trademarked your cloud?

Remember two years ago when we had that little stir up over the term Web 2.0?

Well today we have moved on to the next industry focus which is Cloud Computing. Cloud Computing has been around for a while now, and developers have been drawing little cloud symbols for a few decades now to relate computers to networks.

Guess what?

Dell wants to own Cloud Computing!

Way to go Dell!

Does this mean we are going to see them footing all of the Cloud Computing conferences for the next few years?

Obviously if you have an interest in working in this space you might care about the trademarking of a generic term.

On a related note, it makes me wonder if I should have trademarked "Organic Open Source" .

That term has been getting a lot of usage as of late. Maybe I should nab it before I have to figure out how to generate the little "TM" symbol on my keyboard :)

They spent a lot of money on trademarking all things "grid" to find the same concepts refactored into clouds a few years later.....

Less than an hour after my mail (Dell Inc. Trademark #77139082 (Classes 40, 42): CLOUD COMPUTING) to the cloud-computing group and quicker than you can say 'the cloud is not a grid' it's aready popping up all over the Interwebs!

Anyway one could justifiably ask what this has to do with Cloud Computing:
Known as Cloud or Hyperscale, this evolving architectural strategy takes many forms but has one fundamental attribute: resiliency and availability stemming from software that often spans over thousands of hardware nodes.


I figured there'd be some calls to some lawyers but I guess some people are pretty pissed off right now...
