Google typically gets things right. I rarely find myself annoyed with them.

Why tonight? Read the note below.

What does it mean? It means that somewhere on LJ some comment spammer has dumped something onto one of my comment pages. There is little chance of me finding it.

What should the email below have in it?

A list of offensive links.

What does it offer?

Nothing, and none of the links it gives me are worthwhile either.

Annoying.

Dear site owner or webmaster of krow.livejournal.com,

While we were indexing your webpages, we detected that some of your pages were using techniques that were outside our quality guidelines, which can be found here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

In order to preserve the quality of our search engine, we have temporarily removed some webpages from our search results. Currently pages from krow.livejournal.com are scheduled to be removed for at least 30 days.

Specifically, we detected hidden links on krow.livejournal.com. We also consider this practice as engaging in link schemes to artificially raise the reputation of sites you link to. From the HTML source of your home page:

fioricet online no prescription
buy florinef
online order ativan
buy online soma
adipex effects side
effects side zyprexa
ambien next day delivery
herpes valtrex
cheapest cialis

We would prefer to have your pages in Google's index. If you wish to be reincluded, please correct or remove all pages that are outside our quality guidelines. When you are ready, please visit:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/reinclusion?hl=en

to learn more and request a reconsideration request.

Sincerely,

Thank you!

Of course it does me no good, since there is no way to verify ownership of a livejournal page with Google :)

except if they're going to remove sites, don't you think they ought to let you know *which* ones they're going to remove?

When I looked at Google's cache of that page, the offending content didn't appear in the source. Is that because Brian asked them to re-crawl the site before I got around to reading this thread, and their cache is up-to-date again already?

I was just wondering if the offending content was hidden in a comment...

[edit] This was meant to be in reply to poon. Too lazy to move it.

Except that I'm surprised that that worked if they've (temporarily) taken down pointers to his site.

More generally: I've been noticing that Google has been indexing less and less of LJ blogs. My own posts rank very well, thank you, for several weeks/months, and then they seem to fall off completely. Very frustrating when I'm trying to find my own post, written several years ago.

Further, LJ themselves doesn't seem to offer a good "search X journal" (or at least "my"), and the LJsearch / LJfind sites out there don't seem to be able to do a very good job, either. (The spammer-blog-masher sites seem to do a slightly better job, unfortunately.)

So: This would imply a business model that would combine LJ archival along with search, available with a variety of privacy filters, depending on one's taste. While I'd of course prefer that LJ themselves offer this, I'd almost be willing a pay a few bucks a month in order to have such an offsite feature.

Well I completely disagree. What it actually means is that you have an open gateway that is allowing people to post spam, them giving you links to the specific spam they have discovered (so that you can remove just those entries) is about as useful as someone giving me message-id's to email spam I've sent. Which is to say it doesn't solve the problem.
