Time Machine blows, ok... it just does not do network drives...

In the beginning I was really excited about Time Machine. I thought "wow, this is going to make backups work for me".

Nope, it did not. Worse then that, the drives were all sitting next to the machines, instead of in some secure location.

So what did I do on my vacation day?

Took all the drives and hung them off of a Mac Mini which is now in a closet elsewhere.

And for backups?

I am using Backup.app, aka the original Backup software Apple wrote. Which, unlike Time Machine, will work with network drives. It is not as pretty, but it does the job.

And in the end?

Doing the job is what I want.

And what have I transferred my excitement to?

The built in VNC client :)

It works seamlessly. I really dislike mucking around with stuff, and it solved a number of my problems with my VNC setups.

It just works.

Excellent.

I didn't see that, but I read up on the discussion about how to make it work (and why it will fail on you). I figure that either by 10.6 or via a bunch of updates Apple will get TimeMachine working.

What is odd though is that they continue to put effort into Backup.app. Its like they have some sort of odd split in their development teams.

Are you using it?

No, I'm not yet on Leopard :)

Well, my backup is just copying encrypted "document.dmg" to a network drive (samba). And that's it :)

BTW I tried out the tool you mentioned. When I left the house it looked to be working...
